This step-by-step video by ChrisFix covers exactly how our cameras are installed.
The same method applies to every Redlite model — front, cabin, and rear.
The Process
Installation in 4 Steps
No tools. No drilling. No mess. Most installs take under 15 minutes.
Step 01
Position & Mount
Clean the windshield, position the camera behind the rearview mirror, and press the mount firmly in place. No drilling required.
Step 02
Route the Cable
Tuck the power cable along the A-pillar trim, across the headliner, and down to the power source. Stays completely hidden.
Step 03
Connect Power
Plug into the 12V socket for quick setup, or use the included hardwire kit to tap a fuse for a cleaner, always-on install.
Step 04
Configure & Record
Set the date, time, and resolution. Format your memory card. Start the engine — your Redlite camera starts recording automatically.
Step by Step
Detailed Installation Walkthrough
Follow each step in order for the cleanest, most reliable install.
Step 01 — Positioning
Choose the Right Spot on Your Windshield
The best position for your dash cam is directly behind your rearview mirror. This keeps the camera out of your line of sight while giving it a clear, centred view of the road ahead.
- Mount behind — not below — the rearview mirror for a clean look
- Clean the mounting spot with the included alcohol wipe first
- Let the alcohol fully dry before applying the mount (30–60 seconds)
- Press the mount firmly and hold for 30 seconds
- Leave to cure for at least 1 hour before driving if possible
Tip from ChrisFix: In warmer climates, leave the mount to set overnight for maximum adhesion strength — especially on curved windshields.
Step 02 — Cable Routing
Hide the Power Cable for a Factory-Clean Finish
Running the cable neatly is what separates a professional-looking install from a messy one. The cable tucks behind the rubber windshield trim, travels along the headliner, down the A-pillar, and under the dash to the power source.
- Use a trim pry tool (or a plastic card) to tuck cable behind the rubber windshield seal
- Run cable across the headliner behind the sunvisor clips
- Route down the A-pillar — the trim usually pops in and out by hand
- Guide cable under the dash to your chosen power source
- For rear cameras: run along the roof lining, down the B & C-pillars, under the boot trim
Important: Keep cables away from airbag deployment zones. Never route cables through door seals or movable parts.
Step 03 — Power Connection
Two Ways to Power Your Camera
Every Redlite camera comes with a 12V cigarette lighter cable for immediate use. If you want a cleaner look — or want parking mode to work while the engine is off — use the included hardwire kit to connect directly to your fuse box.
- 12V socket: Plug in and go. Easiest setup. Camera powers on with ignition.
- Hardwire kit: Tap a switched fuse for a clean, cable-free look
- Parking mode: Tap a constant fuse — camera stays active when parked
- Ground the hardwire kit to a nearby chassis bolt
- A 5A or 10A fuse for the radio, interior lights, or USB ports usually works well
Which fuse to use? A switched fuse (one that turns off with the ignition) is ideal for most drivers.
Step 04 — Configuration
Set Up Your Camera Before You Drive
Before you head out, take two minutes to configure your camera. Set the correct date and time, choose your recording resolution, and format your memory card inside the camera for best compatibility.
- Set the date and time accurately — this timestamps your footage correctly
- Format the SD card inside the camera (not on a PC) for best results
- Enable loop recording so older footage is overwritten automatically
- Set video resolution to the highest available setting
- Enable G-sensor / event recording to lock footage on impact
- Do a short test drive and review the first clip to check the angle
Memory card recommendation: Use a high-endurance microSD card rated for continuous recording. Samsung PRO Endurance or SanDisk High Endurance are ideal.

Common Installation Questions
Does the dash cam turn on automatically?
Yes. Every Redlite camera starts recording automatically when you turn on the ignition, and stops when you turn it off. No buttons to press — just drive.
Will the suction mount damage my windshield?
No. The 3M adhesive mount leaves no residue and is designed for windshield glass. The included alcohol wipe ensures a clean surface for maximum adhesion without damage.
Do I need to hardwire the camera?
Not for standard recording. The 12V cigarette lighter cable works perfectly for day-to-day use. Hardwiring is only needed if you want parking mode or prefer to keep your 12V socket free.
How much SD card space do I need?
We recommend a 64GB or 128GB high-endurance microSD card. At 1080p, a 64GB card stores roughly 8–10 hours of footage before loop recording overwrites the oldest files.
Can I install a rear or cabin camera too?
Yes. Redlite cameras support multi-channel setups. The rear camera cable runs along the headliner and down the C-pillar. Contact us if you need help with your specific vehicle.
Is there any support if I get stuck?
Absolutely. Our NZ-based support team is on hand to walk you through any part of the install. Reach out via our contact page — we typically respond the same day.
